Trail Running in Europe

Trail Running in Europe

As someone who frequently worked in Europe, I always looked forward to getting away from the city and hitting the trails to explore all the amazing trails Europe offers. Europe is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the world, and there's no better way to explore them than by trail running.

My weekend trips usually started with a plane flight from Stockholm or Berlin, as these cities have easy access to some of the best trail running destinations in Europe. Once I arrived at my destination, I would usually rent a car, schedule a taxi, or take an Uber to the nearest trailhead.

I have to say that some of my favorite destinations have been the Dry Stone Route in Mallorca, the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria, the Beskids in Poland, Maribor in Slovenia, and the Westweg Trail in Germany.

The Dry Stone Route in Mallorca is a 135-kilometer trail that winds its way through the Tramuntana Mountains, offering stunning views of the rugged coastline and traditional villages along the way. The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it a great option for runners of all levels.

The Rila Mountains in Bulgaria are another must-visit destination for trail runners. The trails here range from easy to challenging, with stunning views of snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear lakes. Running through the rugged terrain of the Rila Mountains was an unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend it to any trail runner.

The Beskids in Poland are another hidden gem for trail runners. The trails here offer a mix of challenging climbs and gentle descents, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The Beskids are also home to many charming villages and historic sites, making it a great destination for a weekend trip.

Maribor in Slovenia is another great destination for trail runners. The Pohorje Mountains, located just outside of Maribor, offer a range of trails for runners of all levels. The trails wind through lush forests and offer stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains. Maribor itself is also a charming city with plenty of cultural and historical sites to explore.

Finally, the Westweg Trail in Germany is a must-visit destination for any trail runner. The trail stretches over 285 kilometers through the Black Forest, offering stunning views of the rolling hills and picturesque villages along the way. The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it a great option for runners of all levels.

If you're looking to explore the trails in Europe, my blog is a great resource. I've included a map of everywhere I've run, as well as links to resources for finding trails in different countries. Whether you're living in Europe or just visiting for work or vacation, I highly recommend taking a break from the cities and hitting the trails. It's a great way to see a different side of Europe and stay active while doing it.
